Understanding Financial Statements: 6 modules of 2 - 3 hours each


1. Financial Statements – A Preview

This module introduces the Financial Statements that are prepared by a business entity.  You will learn what financial statements are, their importance, and how to use them.

2. Fundamentals of Financial Statements

This module breaks down the elements of financial statements. You will learn basic accounting principles, key accounting equations, how financial statements are presented, and the linkages between the income statement and the balance sheet.  

3. Introduction to Financial Statement Analysis

This module provides a general framework for analyzing a balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. Learn about the importance of the notes to financial statements, and management discussion and analysis of results.

4. Understanding the Income Statement

This module focuses on the income statement and details the purpose, construction, and common-size analysis of an income statement. You will learn to compare performance during different periods and learn important ratios for judging the health indicated by an income statement.  

5. Understanding the Balance Sheet

The balance sheet module details the purpose, construction, pertinent ratios, and common-size analysis of a balance sheet.  You will become familiar with the components of equity and the statement of changes in owners’ equity.

6. Understanding the Cash Flow Statement

You will learn the purpose, construction, and common-size analysis of the cash flow statement. Understanding these concepts will allow you to evaluate trends in performance over several periods and to compare the performance of different companies over the same period.
